17.1 million Internet Users in Mexico in 2005: AMIPCI
Presidency of Mexico, Tec de Monterrey, El Universal, Avantel, MercadoLibre, Cinemex, Bimbo Group, Google and BBVA Bancomer among the main winners of the AMIPCI Award for service quality. The Secretary of Communications and Transportation inaugurated the 5th Strategic Internet Encounter: “A day without Internet”. More than 1,200 people, 72 jury members and 19 panelists attended the call of the Mexican Internet Association (AMIPCI) during the two days of the “encounter”.

With an attendance of more than 1,200 the night of October 11, the 5th Strategic Internet Encounter: “A day without Internet” came to end. It was organized by the Mexican Internet Association in the World Trade Center, Mexico City. The opening ceremony was in charge of the Secretary of Communications and Transportation Pedro Cerisola y Weber, in representation of Mexico’s President Vicente Fox.
After the opening the results of AMIPCI’s study of Internet in Mexico 2005 were revealed, these reflect the habits and customs of internet users and some of the most noticeable ones are:
The estimated amount of internet users in Mexico by year’s end will be of 17.1 million people. Most of them are between 13 and 35 years old. 59 percent of the users are men. The most common place to use internet is home, followed by internet coffee shops, the office and school. The average amount of time people are connected is 1.41 hours. 71 percent of users access internet through Broadband. Most of them are of high socio-economic level. 60 percent of users have accessed a government website. 12 percent used internet banking during the previous month. 9 percent of users have bought something through internet in the last thirty days.
The current subjects of internet’s industry in Mexico, such as Electronic Commerce, Internet Banking, Information Society, Electronic Government and Online Marketing were discussed by Panels and Key Conferences. The central subject was “A day without Internet” and 19 widely known, national and international experts, who represent institutions as important as Visa, Banamex, BBVA Bancomer, Mexicana, UNAM, Procter & Gamble, Media Contacts, El Palacio de Hierro, MecadoLibre, Infonavit, SAT and STPS, among others were in charge of the conferences.
During the encounter, the AMIPCI 2005 Recognitions were awarded as a “products and services” quality distinction. More than 850 companies and institutions registered to obtain the recognitions and 72 jury members, chosen by the Board of AMIPCI, participated.
The companies and institutions awarded with the 2005 Recognition in the sixteen categories were:

And for the firs time there was a special award, “Recognition to Innovation in Internet”, which was given to MercadoLibre with the already implemented project “Mercado Pago.”
Alfredo Reyes Krafft (BBVA Bancomer), President of the Board of AMIPCI, made public his satisfaction for the results of the encounter and invited the internet companies and businesses that are not yet members to join the Association, which has as main objective the healthy development of Internet’s Industry in our country.
