DON'T GET PREGNANT WITHOUT IT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
"Don't Get Pregnant Without It"
There is no doubt that babies are healthiest when mothers eat well. Since 1977, hundreds of physicians and allied health professionals have been saying "don't get pregnant without it," of a little prenatal guide, "As You Eat, So Your Baby Grows" (Ceres Press). The 16-page publication, by nutritionist Nikki Goldbeck, has helped more than 600,000 babies get a healthy start in life. With this new revised printing, Goldbeck is aiming for 30,000 more.
Each edition of "As You Eat, So Your Baby Grows" is updated to reflect new discoveries and the year 2000 edition is no different. It includes the latest recommended nutrient intakes for B vitamins, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, and vitamin D, a new section on the role of dietary fat during pregnancy, and expanded food sources of various nutrients.
.
As always, the guide outlines the optimal prenatal diet based on the latest U. S. Dietary Guidelines and RDAs. It presents healthy patterns of weight gain, the dangers of alcohol, smoking and drugs, tips for easing the discomforts of pregnancy, and the special concerns of pregnant teens.
A new feature of the year 2000 edition is "Feeding Your New Baby." Goldbeck felt that it was time to go beyond the prenatal stage and help parents manage the challenge of feeding young children. One of her key principles is that children should eat, whenever possible, from the family table. "Serving separate food to your kids can lead to bad food habits and become a manipulative tool on their part."
As You Eat, So Your Baby Grows has received recognition from such varied sources as the March of Dimes, Charles S. Mahan, M. D., Director, Maternal Health, State of Florida, Jane Brody, of The New York Times, the Boston Women's Health Collective, the International Childbirth Education Association, and the La Leche League, and more than 500 obstetricians and health professionals.
Nikki Goldbeck obtained her degree in food and nutrition from Cornell University. She is a New York State licensed Certified Dietitian Nutritionist and co-author of seven food-related books, including the newly released The Healthiest Diet in the World (Dutton). She runs a private nutrition practice in conjunction with physicians in Woodstock, N. Y and conducts workshops for professional and lay audiences.
