Shavar Ross, best known for his role as "Dudley", Gary Coleman's best friend on the hit 1980's television show "Diff'rent Strokes" announces the first of a new urban family drama series, "A Taste of Us", a 35-minute short film shot in the new digital 24p technology. "We are excited about the release of this new family television drama", said Ross, president and founder of Tri-Seven Entertainment, a new television and film production company which produces cutting-edge morality-based projects for mostly urban audiences.
"The film takes place in the 60's segregated south and is a surreal drama about a small town African-American minister who comes together with his dysfunctional family on Thanksgiving Day. The Reverend realizes, seemingly too late, how important his family really means to him", said Ross, a former actor as well as pastor. "The movie is about putting your family first, before work or career", explained Ross.
The film, written, directed and edited by Ross, was shot on a small budget in south central Los Angeles. "I use the mask of the 1960's to deal with present-day social issues urban families face such as father-son relationships, health related issues and even homosexuality all in the first episode", proclaimed Ross. In addition to film festival entries, Ross is trying to pitch "A Taste of Us" as a direct-to-video series in the Urban/Christian retail markets. "I'd like to see more positive programming out there that portray African-Americans in a non-stereotypical light. People and some industry folks are already expressing interest our film, we just need a distributor who can get it out there to the people", said Ross.
Ross now 33, has appeared in numerous television shows throughout his twenty year career as an actor, including, such hit shows as "Family Matters", "Designing Women", "Magnum P. I.", and "Fresh Prince of Bel Air". He also starred in the cult horror flick "Friday the 13th Part V". "I hope to make a successful transition from acting to directing for television and film", said Ross.
Set to air in April, look for Ross to be featured in a VH-1 two-hour documentary about the lives of child stars.
