Streetplayer. com, is a place where investors, share traders, brokers from around the world discuss in detail about the latest happenings in the share market world, post complaints against fraudulent sepeculators, and trade shares.

South Korean stocks led Asian shares higher on Monday, buoyed by robust earnings at LG Electronics, while the dollar stayed near four-month lows against the euro after weak inflation data.

Reuters

As per the comment from gerrard. com, July has given us the hoped for month of consolidation. Markets have been bombarded with data, both economic and corporate, and have remained steadfastly unmoved. This is thoroughly healthy and demonstrates that few have become carried away by the gains of the second quarter. Equity markets appear to be efficiently valued, taking account of the prospect of a US led recovery in 2004 and the risk of ongoing economic torpor. The FTSE 100's trading range has narrowed even further into a band between 4000 and 4200. Optimism over next year's prospects is attracting buyers in at the bottom end of this, while nerves over the lack of hard evidence for the recovery means that there is, as yet, insufficient appetite to chase share prices higher. The likelihood is that the break, when it comes, will be upwards but it is important to remember that it is still a close call.

Quorum Review IRB Debuts Simple Post-Marketing Process

Quorum Review IRB Debuts Simple Post-Marketing Process

Quorum's service offering for post-marketing studies includes special pricing and a simplified application form for investigators.

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) November 16, 2010

Post marketing studies have been playing a greater role in the clinical trials landscape since the Food and Drug Administration Amendments Act of 2007 (FDAAA) became effective in March 2008 and recently, as the implications of health care reform become more clear. As these studies involve approved drugs or procedures and are typically limited to data collection, they involve less risk than Phase I-III trials. Additionally, these studies often involve larger numbers of sites, span a longer period of time and utilize many investigators who rarely, if ever, participate in clinical trials – and are therefore not as accustomed to the paper work that often accompanies Phase I-III studies.

In response to market needs, Quorum Review has created a service offering specifically for these post-marketing studies. This latest service offering includes price breaks to accommodate long study durations and high volumes of sites. Quorum’s investigator application form for post-marketing studies is short, clear and requires minimal attachments. If any investigators do have questions, Quorum’s Site Support Team is available to answer telephone calls from 8:00 a. m. Eastern time to 5:00 p. m. Pacific time.

“We realize that investigators in post-marketing studies provide an important research service,” says Cami Gearhart, Quorum’s CEO, “and so we have built out our processes to provide as much support as possible.” Quorum is committed to continue to developing new service offerings as the market changes. This latest innovation is a reflection of Quorum’s continued efforts to be the IRB to whom clients turn when performance matters.

Families Encouraged to Motivate Seniors for American Diabetes Day

Families Encouraged to Motivate Seniors for American Diabetes Day

Diabetes is a serious issue affecting 24 million Americans. It’s a major health concern and mounting problem for the country as a whole – especially for the rapidly expanding senior population in Havertown, PA.

Havertown, PA (PRWEB) March 8, 2010

Diabetes is a serious issue affecting 24 million Americans. It’s a major health concern and mounting problem for the country as a whole – especially for the rapidly expanding senior population in Havertown, PA. In recognition of American Diabetes Day on March 23rd, Senior Helpers, the nation’s fastest growing provider of senior in-home care services (http://www. seniorhelperspa. com), is asking families to think about ways to reduce the impact of the disease on the local senior community.

“The population as a whole is aging and the number of seniors dealing with diabetes continues to climb,” said Kevin Herman, President of Senior Helpers in Havertown, PA. (http://www. seniorhelperspa. com) “The risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases dramatically with age. It’s important for seniors and their families to realize that there are ways to reduce the potential impact of diabetes on quality of life.”

Consider the following facts about seniors and diabetes:

More than 23% of Americans age 60 and older have diabetes according to the American Diabetes Association.  An estimated 50 % of adult onset diabetes (type 2) occurs in those over 55 years of age.  Seniors are far more likely to have complicating conditions stemming from diabetes, including kidney problems, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure.  The total cost of diabetes in the United States for direct and indirect medical costs is estimated at more than $200 billion per year. Research has repeatedly shown that physical activity is one of the best ways seniors can prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes and complications from the disease in those already diagnosed. As people get older, exercise becomes even more important in keeping the body healthy and able to fight debilitating diseases like diabetes. For seniors, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends at least 30 minutes of exercise at moderate intensity, five or more times per week.

Benefits of Exercise for Seniors Fighting Diabetes:

Improves the body’s use of insulin  Burns excess body fat, helping to decrease and control body weight  Increases blood flow to reduce risk of related heart disease  Keeps heart and blood vessels healthy by lowering “bad” (LDL) cholesterol “Families should consider diabetes as it relates to care and arrangements for elderly loved ones,” said Herman, “Small things like making sure transportation is available, encouraging exercise, and preventing isolation can really make all the difference. Professional caregivers can help by providing these services and motivating seniors to remain physically active, healthy, and sustain a high quality of life.”

42% of Popular Diet Supplements Rated “Not Approved” by Independent Lab Test

42% of Popular Diet Supplements Rated “Not Approved” by Independent Lab Test

Neither the FDA nor any other federal or state agency routinely tests supplements for quality, prior to sale. Yet, there are potential problems that can exist...

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) September 8, 2006

Consumer Lab, an independent testing organization has evaluated 7 popular diet supplements and has rated 42% or 3 of the most popular brands “Not Approved”.

The study considered three factors - the amount of key or active ingredient contained, contamination levels and ability to break apart, and gave thumbs down to some of the most heavily advertised products on the market.

Those that received a “Not Approved” review are EZ-Trim, TRIMSPA X3 Original Formula and Life Extension Chromium 200.

Among the reasons for test failure:

· Less-than-stated levels of the active ingredient chromium (some had as little as 25% of the stated chromium content)

· Excessive amounts of chromium and caffeine (one had over 40% more chromium than stated on packaging)

· Existence of potential carcinogen and toxins

Consumer Lab (www. consumerlab. com) whose stated mission is ‘To identify the best quality health and nutrition products through independent testing,’ noted the following:

“Chromium is an essential trace mineral, meaning that your body needs small amounts of it. Chromium is important for insulin function.

Neither the FDA nor any other federal or state agency routinely tests supplements for quality, prior to sale. Yet, there are potential problems that can exist…

It is important to know that the product contains the ingredients that it claims.

Too little and one may not get the expected effect and waste money. Too much, and you may experience negative effects.

Consumer Lab noted that while chromium is available naturally in normal diets (good food sources include cheese, prunes, asparagus, mushrooms, beer, wine), therapeutic levels of chromium require supplementation.

Prevent Home and Tree Destruction with Ample Pruning this Fall

Prevent Home and Tree Destruction with Ample Pruning this Fall.

ATLANTA (PRWEB) October 14, 2005

Autumn arrived September 22 and stormy weather is bound to return. With it comes an expert’s warning to prune trees methodically to prevent or minimize home and property damage. According to Barry Smith, owner of Arbor-Nomics Tree Service, Atlanta homeowners should survey their property for susceptibilities to heavy rains, tornados, lightening, and ice storms.

Although the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina overshadows the devastation caused by the 1998 tornados here in Atlanta, memories are clear among Dunwoody area residents whose homes and properties were lost during that blustery fall seven years ago.

According to Barry Smith, “Trees that have been properly pruned will survive better than unpruned trees during storms. “

Your trees have had all spring and summer, with sun and an overabundance of rain, to grow. Take a look at them. Have the crowns of the trees gotten much thicker? Are the branches hanging down over your roof or against your house? Did the last few thunderstorms cause any breakage? Well, if so, then it might be time to consider pruning them this fall.

Here are some considerations and tips on tree pruning in Atlanta:

Overall, trees should be pruned every two years. Pruning, in general, makes your trees healthier by getting rid of damaged or dead branches, increasing the air flow in the tree which decreases the number of insects and eliminating interior cross and rubbing branches so the energy goes to the exterior of the tree.

Pine trees should be pruned in the cooler weather. Pruning cuts are actually injuries to a tree and, in the case of pines, there is less pine beetle activity in cooler weather, which is healthier for the tree.

Bradford Pears are abundant in Atlanta and create problems for homeowners year round. They must be thinned out to get some of the weight out of the tree, which will prevent splitting.

Pruned trees give your landscape and property a cleaner and neater look. Cutting lower limbs and/or thinning the interior of a tree allow sunlight to penetrate through its branches and helps grass under the tree grow.

Call a reputable company with a certified arborist or a degreed forester. And make sure they have insurance. You can go to www. treecareindustry. org and find a certified arborist near you.

The benefits of true pruning are many, but the most important benefit is to decrease the risk of potential home or property damage.

About Arbor-Nomics Tree

Arbor-Nomics Tree has been caring for trees in Atlanta for over decade and they've been given a "Best Pick" award for Tree Care in Atlanta by Home Reports™ seven years in a row.

Their services include, but are not limited to, pruning, cabling, bracing, soil fertility, consultations, tree removal, stump grinding and wildlife and animal control. To find out more about the benefits of tree pruning, call Arbor-Nomics Tree at 770-447-6037 x: 1111.

About Barry Smith

Barry Smith is the owner of Arbor-Nomics Tree, a local Atlanta tree care company. He holds a Forestry degree from the University of Kentucky.

Barry’s tree care experience spans 21 years and he worked for several tree care companies in Lexington and Atlanta before becoming the owner of Arbor-Nomics Tree in Atlanta. He believes in tree preservation versus removal and respects the environment.

“I believe that trees help to maintain equilibrium in our environment and

are very important to our survival.”

Ali Hewson and Bono Star in Louis Vuitton's Core Values Campaign

Ali Hewson and Bono Star in Louis Vuitton's Core Values Campaign

Ali Hewson and US-vocalist BONO - founders of Edun - are the latest modern icons to be photographed by Annie Leibovitz for Louis Vuitton's Core Values advertising campaign, shot in Africa in March of this year.

New York, NY (PRWEB) September 27, 2010

Ali Hewson and U2-vocalist Bono - founders of Edun - are the latest modern icons to be photographed by Annie Leibovitz for Louis Vuitton’s Core Values advertising campaign, shot in Africa in March of this year.

Antoine Arnault, head of communications at Louis Vuitton, comments: “We are delighted that both Ali and Bono, who have never before participated in an advertising campaign, agreed to be photographed for Core Values. We are very proud of our association with Edun.”

The image, portraying Ali and Bono walking in a vast landscape, reflects the couple’s long relationship with Africa. Both are long-term campaigners in the fight against extreme poverty and in 2005 they founded the ethical clothing label Edun (http://www. youtube. com/watch? v=l4aF1CSyszg) to encourage trade with Africa and to highlight the possibilities for the fashion community to do business there. In 2009, LVMH, in line with its long-standing commitment to sustainable development, acquired a 49% stake in Edun in order to promote more widely the brand’s positive vision of responsible trade.

For the Core Values campaign, both Ali and Bono wear Edun clothing. Ali carries a Louis Vuitton/Edun collaboration bag. This collaboration bag is a brown Keepall 45 in Louis Vuitton’s embossed Monogram Révélation leather. The bag is accessorized with a Monogram charm hand-crafted in Kenya by Made, a fair-trade fashion accessory company which strives to provide employment and promote ethical trade in Africa (http://www. youtube. com/watch? v=G53D-IQzUqM). Made regularly partners with Edun. Both the charm and the inside of the Monogram Révélation bag bear a plaque with the inscription “Every journey began in Africa.” Along with his guitar case, Bono carries a waterproof Keepall travel bag in Monogram canvas.

Proceeds from the sale of the Louis Vuitton/Edun collaboration bag will go to TechnoServe in Africa for the Conservation Cotton Initiative and related programs. Ali and Bono’s fee for the shoot will go to both TechnoServe in Africa for the Conservation Cotton Initiative and related programs and to Chernobyl Children International.

Edun founder Ali Hewson says, “We want Edun to be a success because the more it grows, the more we can do on the ground.”

U2-vocalist and activist Bono says, “Ali has worked hard to build Edun from scratch, and thanks to LVMH's commercial muscle and support, this fledgling company can go from strength to strength – which means increased business for our partners in developing countries.”

Since 1987, it has been part of LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the world’s foremost luxury goods group.

About Edun

Launched in 2005 by Ali Hewson and Bono, Edun (http://www. edun. com) is a for-profit fashion company founded on the premise of trade for aid as a means to alleviate poverty through sustainable employment and growth. In Africa, its aim is to encourage trade and raise awareness of the possibilities there. In 2007, the company launched Edun Live, a blank T-shirt division that is 100% “grow to sew” African produced. In 2009, LVMH took a substantial stake in the company. Edun is sold in leading department and specialty stores worldwide, and is available at the Merci store in Paris.

About Conservation Cotton Initiative

The Conservation Cotton Initiative (CCI) is a program established by Edun and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) to help local cotton farmers build sustainable communities by promoting biodiversity, education and health care whilst providing a fair market for their cotton. CCI teamed up with Invisible Children (IC) to create CCI Uganda in Gulu, a district in Northern Uganda that is recovering from a violent civil war, which lasted over 20 years. Almost two million people were displaced, forced to live in IDP (Internationally Displaced Persons) camps and suffered from disease, poverty and starvation. Gulu is an area where agriculture once thrived, in particular, cotton growing. By joining the CCI program farmers are provided the opportunity to return back to their land and are given the funding and tools necessary to get back on their feet by growing cotton. CCI notably grows cotton for the Edun Live range of blank T-shirts, launched in 2007, which are entirely produced in Africa.

Connecture, Inc. Acquires Insurint to Transform Sales Automation for the Health Insurance Industry

Connecture, Inc. Acquires Insurint to Transform Sales Automation for the Health Insurance Industry

Acquisition creates largest end-to-end sales automation provider in the health insurance market

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) April 19, 2010

Connecture, Inc. announced today that it has acquired Insurint in a bold step towards transforming health insurance distribution. This combination creates the largest end-to-end sales automation provider in the health insurance market by joining Insurint, a leader in broker sales automation with Connecture, the leader in health insurance carrier sales automation.

The strategic combination broadens Connecture’s suite of services that helps payers attract and maintain the growing number of consumers buying individual insurance plans through the broker channel. As the individual health insurance market continues to gain momentum, the company will offer health insurers and brokers a full range of options through a multi-carrier channel. Connecture comes to the relationship with over 80 health insurer customers who reach over 50,000 insurance agents. Together, the companies serve more than half of the nation’s leading insurance carriers including many Blue Cross Blue Shield carriers, WellPoint, Kaiser, United Healthcare, Humana One, and Assurant Health.

Through combining Connecture’s eApplication health insurer sales automation platform with Insurint’s multi-carrier quoting broker platform, the company will offer technology that fully automates the end-to-end quoting, application, and enrollment processes. The combination will offer straight-through processing from lead management to quoting and application through to enrollment and post-sale management, with a one-of-a-kind software solution specifically designed to meet the growing demands of the health insurance market. Benefits will include the opportunity for brokers to sell more business and reduce drop-off; true end-to-end automation for intermediaries, agents, and aggregators; and reduced frustration, friction, and cost in the marketplace.

“In this post-health care reform environment, it is critical that technology is leveraged to take cost and friction out of the membership acquisition and retention process. Public and private aggregators and brokers will continue to play a large role in the health insurance market if they leverage the benefits that technology has to offer. Our combined solution will enable those distribution channels to leverage such benefits,” explained Dan Maynard, Chief Executive Officer of Connecture. “We are excited to join forces with Insurint to bring this technology to market.”

Added Connecture director David Jones, Jr., Chairman of Chrysalis Ventures, “I’m excited about Connecture’s opportunity to help insurers lower costs for their members and customers. This acquisition will extend the reach and impact of the company’s productivity-enhancing solutions." In addition to Chrysalis, Connecture’s other institutional investors include SSM Ventures, Total Technology Ventures, and LiveOak Equity.

Further detail about this acquisition will be announced at Connecture’s upcoming User Conference on May 12-13, 2010.

Packaged Facts projects sales of natural/organic food and beverages will soar past $46 billion by 2010, increasing by nearly 63%, as the popularity and availability of natural/organic products continues to gain momentum. The addition of Wal-Mart as a major purveyor of organics, rapid growth in all major supermarkets’ private label organic offerings, and highly anticipated expansion of the widely successful supermarket “lifestyle” stores assures the forthcoming exponential market growth.

In most cases, the growth of leading natural/organic brands continues to greatly outpace that of their respective categories, while organic products themselves are outselling “natural” ones because they are newer to mass channels and carry more clout with consumers because they are government-regulated.

“Organics have clearly become a way of life for millions of health-conscious Americans, and the success of the big 3—Whole Foods, Wild Oats, and Trader Joe’s—has finally awakened mainstream American retail to the viability of this market” notes Don Montuori, the publisher of Packaged Facts. “This research delves into the inner-sanctum of the industry showing why it has become—and will continue to be—the hottest area in food retailing.”

Focusing primarily on organics, Natural and Organic Food and Beverage Industry Trends provides an in-depth and far-reaching discussion of the current and projected retailing activities within the market. The report examines new product and promotional trends, offers competitive profiles of producers, marketers and retailers, and looks at consumer trends and behaviors surrounding organics and natural products. Priced at $3,000, this is available from Packaged Facts by clicking: http://www. packagedfacts. com/pub/1187212.html (http://www. packagedfacts. com/pub/1187212.html). Silicon Valley Venture CapitalistsÂ’ Confidence Holds Steady in 1st Quarter of 2005

Silicon Valley Venture CapitalistsÂ’ Confidence Holds Steady in 1st Quarter of 2005

The University of San Francisco Silicon Valley Venture Capitalist Confidence Index for the first quarter of 2005 came in at 3.96 on a 5 point scale. This level of confidence is essentially unchanged from the last quarter of 2004, and suggests a healthy level of venture financing and entrepreneurial activity in the Bay Area in the near future.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) April 22, 2005

The University of San Francisco Silicon Valley Venture Capitalist Confidence Index for the first quarter of 2005 came in at 3.96 on a 5 point scale. This level of confidence is essentially unchanged from the last quarter of 2004, and suggests a healthy level of venture financing and entrepreneurial activity in the Bay Area in the near future. The index is based on an April survey of 40 San Francisco Bay Area venture capitalists.

"This quarter's survey reveals a blend of optimism and caution. A good overall economic environment is a key factor for the overall high confidence among the responding venture capitalists. However, certain economic issues such as high energy prices, rising interest rates and spotty corporate spending caused some uncertainty," said Mark Cannice and Roger Chen, co-creators of the index and professors at the USF School of Business and Management. According to them, high confidence mostly focused on consumer related technologies and energy rather than biotech or IT during the first quarter of 2005.

Bart Schachter of Blueprint Ventures said, "The Bay Area is resuming levels of 93-94...the next up-cycle is three to four years away." Also optimistic is Venky Ganesan, Globespan Capital Partners, stating, "We are witnessing an inflection point in the tech funding cycle and are now hitting an upward slope in the funding environment. Silicon Valley has its mojo back – parking lots at Buck’s and Il Fornaio are full, traffic is backing up on 280 and startups are getting multiple term sheets".

Other venture capitalists offered more cautious evaluations. Sergi Martorell of 3i said that, "It is unlikely that we return to boom levels anytime soon. My prediction is cautious optimism and a gradual recovery in the venture entrepreneurial environment." Randolph L. Tom of Dynasty Capital Services said that the old adage of too much money chasing too few deals is still applicable. Brendan Richardson echoed this sentiment, concerned that, "..LP (limited partner) enthusiasm for US ventures will create another wall of money that drives up valuations and results in another bubble. ...So while the near term looks rosy, the long term looks cloudy."

New Society of Actuaries’ Survey Finds Pre-Retirees Not Prepared for Healthcare Costs in Retirement

New Society of Actuaries’ Survey Finds Pre-Retirees Not Prepared for Healthcare Costs in Retirement

Even if Faced with Rising Healthcare Costs, Findings Reveal that More Than One-Third of Pre-Retirees Won’t Make Any Changes to Their Retirement Plans or Will Save Less and Live for Today

Schaumburg, IL (PRWEB) October 25, 2010

Nearly two-thirds (62 percent) of pre-retirees ages 50-64 are not at all confident that they are saving enough to handle healthcare costs in retirement, according to a new survey from the Society of Actuaries (SOA). Additionally, only seven percent of participants said they are very confident about having enough savings.

This SOA survey analyzed how the continuing spike in healthcare costs is affecting consumers’ retirement plans. Of this group of pre-retirees, one-fourth say they would delay retirement if healthcare costs continue to rise rapidly, and more than one-third say they won’t do anything or they’ll save less and just live life the best way they can today.

“If nothing is done to curtail the rapidly rising healthcare costs, it is inevitable that costs will continue to make a significant dent in consumers’ pocketbooks,” says John Schubert, ASA, MAAA, FCA and Specialist Leader for Deloitte Consulting, LLP. “The findings from this SOA survey clearly show that the continuing increase in healthcare costs is a real concern for pre-retirees and could potentially affect their ability to maintain their standard of living in retirement.”

According to findings from the survey, it’s also apparent there is a significant disconnect between what pre-retirees view as a manageable increase in healthcare costs and what is probably going to happen over the next several years. When asked what the highest level of annual healthcare cost increases would be considered manageable for them in the long-term, more than two-thirds (68 percent) of pre-retirees said that only a one, three or five percent increase in annual costs would be manageable. However, in reality, according to estimates made by the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services in October 2010, healthcare costs are expected to increase, on average, by 6.3 percent annually, until the year 2019.

Findings from the SOA survey also revealed that outliving one’s assets – also known as longevity risk – when no longer working is of the most concern to only 28 percent of pre-retirees, and being able to afford health insurance only concerns another 26 percent.

“The combination of increasing life expectancy and greater healthcare costs could be devastating to personal finances if pre-retirees have not addressed these factors in their retirement plans,” says Tonya Manning, FSA, MAAA, EA, FCA and actuary specializing in retirement planning. “Actuaries can help individual consumers mitigate longevity risks by considering a wide range of factors, including the cost of healthcare, which will affect finances in retirement.”

Other key findings from the SOA survey include:

Only 17 percent of pre-retirees said they are more likely to retire before the age of 65 (prior to eligibility for Medicare at 65) due to the increase in access to healthcare coverage.  Fourteen percent of pre-retirees do not know what changes they will make to their retirement plans if healthcare costs continue to rise rapidly.  Besides having enough savings to live on when no longer working, nearly one in five pre-retirees are concerned that they will not be able to cover the cost of long-term care, if needed.

The SOA findings were based upon a nationally representative online survey of 1,020 individuals, ages 50-64, which had an error rate of plus or minus 3.10 percentage points.

Mitigating Pandemic Impact Through Telework: Direct Experience with SARS Provides Valuable Continuity Lessons

Mitigating Pandemic Impact Through Telework: Direct Experience with SARS Provides Valuable Continuity Lessons

As officials warn the public about potential health consequences of pandemics, attention is shifting toward its impact on organizations. Gill Advisors Inc. and Streamlogics Inc. will provide a live webcast on December 15 that will offer public and private sector participants tangible ways to enhance their continuity planning with telework being integrated as a key component. This webcast is free and available by registration.

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) December 13, 2005 –-

Last week, the Congressional Budget Office suggested Avian Flu could impose a $675 billion hit to the U. S. economy, underscoring the need for organizations to adequately plan for the continuity of operations. Gill Advisors Inc. and Streamlogics Inc. will conduct a live webcast on Thursday, December 15 at 9:30 a. m. discussing how the economic impact of an outbreak might be better managed by integrating telework as a core component of a business continuity plan. They will be joined by a Senior Official of the U. S. General Services Administration (GSA) who will discuss GSA’s telework initiative. For Gill Advisors Managing Director Tony Gill, it’s a case of déjà vu all over again.

The 2003 SARS outbreak in Toronto began in a hospital located within two miles of his home where he had been taking his father for physiotherapy after knee replacement surgery. The first significant business casualty was the Canadian operations of a global IT firm, whose headquarters were visible from the window of his daughter’s pre-school classroom. The proximity to the outbreak’s epicenter forced him and his wife to remove their daughter from school, stay home, and try to maintain work productivity using a home broadband connection when deadlines were looming.

“The company where I worked was trying to meet an end of the week deadline on a major proposal,” Gill recalls, “I was one of the point people on a team of seven, and the thought of being away for an extended period would have been inconceivable a week earlier.” The team quickly went into improvisational mode using broadband to exchange emails and documents that required constant revision. “We were on the phones constantly” he continues “but within a short time we set one rule: if you leave your desk, have your cell phone on so if we need you, you’re no more than a call away.”

The experience was illuminating as it showed that an improvised adaptation of telework could be used to carry out work, and proved telework could be applied within a broad spectrum of industries beyond IT firms. “The key was identifying tasks, systematizing them and mapping them to the most appropriate available technologies,” Gill says enthusiastically, but adds that since 2003 the potential for telework has exploded, “Broadband’s here and today there are so many more tools that replicate face-to-face contact such as webcasting and desktop sharing.”

The webcast will discuss tangible ways in which telework can be integrated into a wide range of industries to mitigate the economic hit associated with a potential outbreak. The webcast is available by registration and can be accessed through the following link:

Http://events. streamlogics. com/gill/dec15-05/index. asp (http://events. streamlogics. com/gill/dec15-05/index. asp)

Those unable to attend the live webcast may access the archive by clicking the above link.

When asked how an improvised telework arrangement affected the outcome of the proposal during that trying week, Gill says "It forced us to concentrate on time-sensitive deliverables," with a smile he adds, "we won the business."

UCSF Scientist Receives Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine

UCSF Scientist Receives Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine

Molecular biologist Elizabeth H. Blackburn, PhD, 60, of the University of California, San Francisco, today was named to receive the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Blackburn shares the award with Carol W. Greider of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Jack W. Szostak of Harvard Medical School.

San Francisco, CA (Vocus) October 6, 2009

Molecular biologist Elizabeth H. Blackburn, PhD, 60, of the University of California, San Francisco, today was named to receive the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Blackburn shares the award with Carol W. Greider of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Jack W. Szostak of Harvard Medical School.

The scientists discovered an enzyme that plays a key role in normal cell function, as well as in cell aging and most cancers. The enzyme is called telomerase and it produces tiny units of DNA that seal off the ends of chromosomes, which contain the body's genes. These DNA units - named telomeres -- protect the integrity of the genes and maintain chromosomal stability and accurate cell division. They also determine the number of times a cell divides -- and thus determine the lifespan of cells.

Telomerase is pronounced (tel-AH-mer-AZE). Telomere is pronounced (TEEL-oh-mere).

The scientists' research sparked a whole field of inquiry into the possibility that telomerase could be reactivated to treat such age-related diseases as blindness, cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative diseases, and deactivated to treat cancer, in which it generally is overactive.

In recent years, Blackburn and colleagues have investigated the possibility that life stress, the perception of life stress and lifestyle behaviors could take a toll on telomerase and telomeres. They have reported several studies with human participants that suggest a correlation. The findings may offer insight, at the cellular level, into the impact of stress on early onset of age-related diseases.

The scientists were named to receive the prize "for the discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the telomerase enzyme," according to the Nobel committee in Stockholm, Sweden.

"Dr. Blackburn's research over the course of more than three decades has revolutionized scientists' understanding of the way in which cells function," said UCSF Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann, MD, MPH. "Her co-discovery of the telomerase has revealed a mechanism that plays a key role in determining the lifespan of cells, as well as the processes of cell aging and cancers.

"Her generous spirit, curiosity and highly collaborative nature have led her to forge research partnerships that have significantly broadened scientists' capacity to understand the remarkable telomerase enzyme. As a scientist, a colleague, a mentor and a woman in science, she is an inspiration to the nation and the world."

UC President Mark Yudof remarked, "The entire University of California community could not be more proud of Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn. Her path breaking work is yet another reminder of the life-changing contributions UC makes to California and to the world."

Evolution of discovery:

The roots of telomere and telomerase research trace back to the 1930s, when geneticists hypothesized that protective caps on chromosomes ensure their ability to propagate during cell division, and prevent them from inappropriately melding with one another.

But it was decades later, between 1975 and 1977, that Blackburn, working as a postdoctoral fellow at Yale University with Joseph Gall, discovered the unusual nature of telomeres, with their simple, repeated DNA sequences composing the chromosomes' ends. Their work was published in 1978.

With Szostak, Blackburn established that the DNA repeats stabilize chromosomes. The two also predicted the existence of an enzyme that would add the sequences to the ends of chromosomes, which reside in cells.

In 1985, while a professor at University of California, Berkeley, Blackburn and her then-graduate student Greider reported the discovery of telomerase. Their research showed that, in some organisms, such as the single-celled pond dweller Tetrahymena, telomerase continuously replenishes the chromosome's telomeric tips. In humans, however, researchers including Blackburn and her group showed that telomerase is damped down at certain times in the lives of many types of cells, limiting their ability to self-replenish.

With this discovery, scientists saw the possibility of exploring whether, in humans, the enzyme could be reactivated to prolong cell life to treat age-related diseases, and deactivated to interrupt cancers.

Blackburn joined the UCSF faculty in 1990 and is the Morris Herzstein Endowed Chair in Biology and Physiology in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics.

She is the fourth UCSF scientist to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

A native of Australia, Blackburn has lived in the United States since 1975, becoming a naturalized citizen in September 2003. She lives in San Francisco with her husband, John Sedat, PhD, a professor of biochemistry and biophysics at UCSF. They have a son, Benjamin.

UCSF is a leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care.

Caregiving. com Founded On One Woman's Spirit And Determination

Caregiving. com Founded On One Woman's Spirit And Determination

Looking for something more led to a career change for a young woman, who turned her desire to help into a web site that, since 1996, has helped hundreds of thousands of family caregivers.

Park Ridge, IL (PRWEB) September 24, 2004

In 1990, at 27 years of age, Denise Brown looked at her career and thought, "There's got to be something more for me."

With that realization came a career change: From managing editor of trade magazines ("Modern Baking" and "Convenience Store Decisions") to working with family caregivers in community-based programs and in nursing homes.

"I worked with family members who cared for spouses, adult children, aging parents, disabled siblings," Brown said. "In my positions, I was able to provide respite services, such as short-term nursing home placements, home health aides and companion sitters. These family members were the nicest people anyone could ever meet--and yet had little support from other family members or friends. They spent a majority of their time caring for someone else. Who cared for them?"

Brown listened to the experiences of family caregivers for the next five years, hearing the common theme: Family caregivers often felt unsupported and misunderstood by other family members, friends and their communities. They also felt that caring for an aging relative was a life-changing experience, but had very few people with whom to discuss the experience.

The idea for a newsletter that helps family caregivers was given life during a keynote speech at an American Hospital Association annual convention in August 1994, which Brown attended. The keynote speaker, a physician, spoke about empowering patients.

"Why not empower those who care for the patients?" Brown wondered. With that idea came Caregiving! newsletter, an empowering tool for family caregivers, which debuted in January, 1995, through a small business Brown started. The launch of Caregiving! newsletter, would soon lead to Caregiving. com.

During the week between Christmas and New Year's in 1995, when Brown was 32, she heard a friend talk about how great the Internet was in terms of reaching a huge number of people. Three months later, Brown had created her own web site (she took an online course on building a web site through Prodigy, an online service). In August of 1996, as a result of the tremendous response to her site, Brown secured her domain name, Caregiving. com. At that time, just a handful of web sites were dedicated to helping family caregivers. Now, hundreds, if not thousands, of web sites devote much of their content to the family caregiver experience.

Each year, Caregiving. com reaches more and more family caregivers; currently about 24,000 monthly visitors enjoy the articles, free online support groups, and insights shared by Brown. Just five years ago, the site reached about 9,000 monthly visitors.

"One person can make a difference," Brown says. "A determined mind and spirit can directly improve the lives of thousands."

And, a little help from technology never hurts.

Daily News Helps Relieve Depression in Viewers

Daily News Helps Relieve Depression in Viewers

There is one daily news service guaranteed to relieve depression brought on by a media overdose on war, terrorism and JonBenet Ramsey. The Good News Network Web site -- celebrating its ninth year this week -- features daily success stories from around the world -- good news from government, science, society and culture.

Northern Virginia (PRWEB) August 30, 2006

There is one daily news service guaranteed to relieve depression brought on by a media overdose on war, terrorism and JonBenet Ramsey. The Good News Network website -- celebrating its ninth year this week -- features daily success stories from around the world -- good news from government, science, society and culture. Instead of balance, you'll hear just one side -- the uplifting side.

Founder Geri Weis-Corbley says of the company's nine year anniversary this week, "Since the Web site began in 1997, I have received letters from many viewers who claim they actually accrue health benefits while reading our positive news." According to visitors' letters displayed on the site, the Good News Network relieved depression and anxiety symptoms brought on by the overdose of depressing news that saturates the Media.

The value of the site also has impressed leaders in the fields of politics and psychology.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell wrote to the Good News Network, "I enjoyed reading the positive stories... (and) am heartened by the goodness and generosity that I see. Keep up your good work."

Tal Ben-Shahar is a lecturer at Harvard University whose positive psychology course was the most popular class on campus this spring with 850 students enrolled. He believes the Good News Network can benefit everyone. "It's an extremely important initiative," he said. "I recommend that each person makes it a habit to visit the Web site at least once a day -- to counter the barrage of negativity in the media. Being exposed to positive information benefits us emotionally, physically, and mentally. It can contribute in a meaningful way to a happier and healthier life."

The barrage of negativity to which Ben-Shahar referred is steadily intensifying: Despite the fact that the U. S. homicide rate dropped by 42% in the 1990's, television news coverage of murders skyrocketed up 721% (Center for Media and Public Affairs). During that time, TV network news audiences and newspaper circulation continued to fall, which may be related to the mad increase in crime coverage.

More and more people are looking for their news on the internet. With her newly redesigned site, and its regular daily content updates, Weis-Corbley, who is the editor and publisher, hopes to make daily readers of the 10,000 people who search every month for "good news" on internet search engines. "We offer the antidote for the hopelessness many people feel after a steady diet of news. We know people need to be informed, but they also need to hear about the successes," Weis-Corbley said.

Weis-Corbley is a pioneer in the positive news arena founding the Good News Network nine years ago on August 31 as the first Web site to offer original and compelling positive news programming. She says that with the advent of new technologies today -- such as RSS and software for content management and blogging -- it is much easier for a small company to publish and link to news content from around the world on a daily basis. "Now it is possible for the Good News Network to amass a large and loyal audience that could rival traditional news networks online," she said. "The bonus for our readers is that our content benefits their health and well being. For those suffering from the depression that permeates so much of society, instead of popping a pill, we suggest A Daily Dose of News to Enthuse."

Weis-Corbley calls on people around the world to sign up for the upcoming e-mail newsletter that will distribute the "Top Ten Good News Stories of the Week". Also on the website you can download a free copy of the September 11 Commemorative Edition newsletter entitled, "Some Good News!" Our 9/11 memorial newsletter is a testament to the power of positive thinking in the midst of tragedy and a reminder of how good it feels to be reading encouraging news.
