A group attending a talk on African Medicine at a festival in New York last month was startled to hear a doctor advise them that they should not be afraid to speak to strangers. "I could see that people were uncomfortable with this idea at first. Parents especially are used to lecturing their children 'don't talk to strangers' as a way of keeping them safe," said Lee Grotte, M. D. "But this sort of advice creates a climate of fear, and I believe that it is safer to actually teach children the communication skills that will help them to spot and avoid trouble before it begins."

Fearfulness has become so pervasive in our society that Grotte believes radical steps are necessary. "There is a constant drumbeat of alarm that emanates from the media, from the government, and even from the medical profession," he says. "Too many people in authority use fear as motivation, and this is counterproductive. We need to find new ways to establish trust between ourselves, not build a wall of fright."

Fear isolates and alienates people, he believes, and often leads to changes in body chemistry that contribute to disease. "I see increasing numbers of people who are suffering physical and mental damage from the effects of constant fear and anxiety. Children pick up very quickly on their parents' fearfulness, and the effects are transmitted throughout the family."

Grotte believes that one of the advantages to tribal styles of medicine, such as the West African tradition, is that there is a natural trusting relationship among members. He suggests that cooperative activities then serve as preventative medicine. "People in tribal societies come together in ceremonies and rituals to celebrate a joyful event, or share grief over a loss, or rouse the energies and courage of the group to overcome an obstacle or a fear."

"The cliché is that a burden shared is a burden lifted, and we see in many medical relationships that there is a great deal of truth to this concept. Modern trends towards healing church services, drum circles, and neighborhood parties reflect this human need for social connection."

Grotte believes that when people come together in this way, there is a stress reducing effect on the entire community.

Modern physicians often dismiss older medical technologies as being ineffective, but research often validates the value of time tested tribal practices.

For example, friendships were even more important than family connections in increasing life span according to a recent study in the Journal of Epidemiological and Community Health.

Also, scientific research by Barry Bittman M. D. indicates that when people drum together, there is benefit for the immune and stress hormone systems. Group activities such as dancing are not only good exercise, but are stress relieving. "I have seen the same benefit for ritual dancing where there is interaction between the musicians and the dancers," says Grotte.

Grotte suggests six steps for reducing fear in your life:

1. Stop watching TV and reading newspapers and magazines. "Most of what you read and watch is sensationalized and designed to push your fear or anger buttons, anyway," says Grotte. "If you think you can't live without media contact, try it for three days. I think you will discover many benefits, including more time for productive activity."

2. Begin to make eye contact with strangers for just a little longer than you are used to. Practice smiling as you do this.

3. If you are not used to speaking to strangers, start by saying hello, good morning, or another statement that doesn't require a response from the other person such as "how are you?"

4. If you are not comfortable speaking, just smile and imagine a pleasant greeting in your head until you are comfortable actually saying the words out loud.

5. If you sense a positive response to your initial greeting, try to engage a stranger in brief conversation. Remember, people like to talk about themselves, so try to listen more than you talk.

6. If you have small children, let them watch you interact with strangers. They will learn how to be comfortable by learning from you. Talk with them about how to notice when a stranger is taking an unusual or fixed interest in them, and what to do.

"Children actually have very good instincts about most people." notes Grotte. "They are nimble and quick, and can usually note danger and escape effectively if they are not surprised or paralyzed with fear. Talk with your children frankly about the need to avoid some situations, but try to give them confidence rather than scare them. There are enough fears in most children's lives already."

With New Years right around the corner and another chance to keep my resolution to lose my excess weight and get back in shape closing in, I decided it was time to get the help of an expert.

Best Selling Author and Personal Fitness Expert James Orvis agreed to share his take on why people fail to maintain their resolve when getting in shape. Orvis's books include "Weight Training Workouts that Work, Volumes I and II."

Orvis has helped thousands of people of all ages and from all walks of life find the motivation, understanding and resolve to use easy weight training exercises just a few hours a week to get and stay in shape.

Me--James, I have made it my resolution to get in Shape (again) this coming New Years, what in your Opinion is the biggest mistake people make when starting this sort of program?

James--A weight training program is crucial to long term health, weight loss and being in shape. Your lean muscle tissue is your engine, your metabolism, because it burns about 90% of your calories everyday.

The problem is, after the age of 20 (even younger if you are very inactive as a young adult), you are losing muscle every year unless you are doing some type of strength training.

So you need to weight train to bring back and increase your fat burning lean muscles.

The biggest mistakes people make when starting a workout program are -

1. Improper form.

2. The wrong exercises.

3. Doing the same thing workouts all the time.

4. Overtraining right away so they quit.

All these mistakes can be fixed very easily by learning the correct way to lift weight for fast results. When you do it right, it is quick, fun and very effective for anyone.

Me--So you feel that improper form and doing the wrong exercises are among the biggest mistakes that people make when starting a weight training program...can you elaborate on how this may cause someone to give up on weight training?

James--When you do the ineffective exercises and use bad form, two major problems occur:

1. Injuries are likely at some point, so you will quit. Or,

2. If you are using ineffective exercises and/or

Bad form, you will not get the results you wanted and most people will get discouraged and quit.

The key is to use basic compound exercises featuring free weights. Compound exercises use alot of big muscles at one time. Like squats, bench press, deadlifts, barbell curls, and lat pulldowns. There are about 15 exercises and if you plug them into proven workouts, you will lose weight, build lean muscle and be super healthy.

Me--I probably have made that mistake in the past. I have gone to the gym, watched the other people working out and tried to do what they did. Then I would come home from the gym and feel like I couldn't move. Then I would quit.

James--Yes, that is one of the most common mistakes a person can make. So many people just go to the gym and figure that if they will do what everyone else is doing, they will get in shape. Sadly, most people who are working out in the gym don't really know what they are doing. So when you copy them, you just start doing it wrong.

That may be the reason I have sold so many books. I have made weight training easy and fun for anyone and made sure that the exercises are demonstrated with proper form. When a person learns to weight train correctly, they see results quickly and are encouraged to continue with the program.

When it comes to the economy, President George Bush and Democratic candidate John Kerry have strongly opposing viewpoints. President George Bush's economic slogan is that "the economy is strong and getting stronger." This frequent phrase has been dished out on the

Campaign trail numerous times as the White House believes there is strong improvement in the economy. However, John Kerry believes otherwise. Rather bluntly, he has criticized the president and has said repeatedly, "The president wants you to re-elect him, for what? Losing jobs?” To evaluate who can be the better candidate in terms of the economy, let us look at President Bush’s record and Kerry’s plan to move the economy forward.

In recent months, one of President BushÂ’s campaign slogans seems to be dead on target. In August, the Labor Department reported that 144,000 were added to the economy. Besides the creation of jobs during that month, the Labor Department revised their June and July job numbers by increasing the number of jobs added by more than 60,000. To add to the positive performance, the U. S. economy gained 1.7 million jobs in the past year, making a case that job growth is healthy and steady. Looking at the U. S. unemployment rate, it is lower then the average rate of unemployment in the past three decades, falling to 5.4 percent in the month of August.

President BushÂ’s agenda for the next four years includes trying to create jobs for the 21st Century that will help educate Americans. The president will provide $500 million in funding to train high-skilled workers in schools. In addition he plans to vigorously fight the tax code to enable people to save and invest. Finally, the president plans to create Opportunity Zones, which will help out communities suffering from economic hardship.

However, John Kerry and his running mate Senator John Edwards, have tried to spin the administrationÂ’s success. Trying to cast a negative image of the presidentÂ’s roll on the economy, the candidates were quick to indicate that this was evidence of BushÂ’s record of failure and promises that were never fulfilled.
